Common Insurance Terminology to assist you through the billing process:

  • Co-payment – A fixed amount for a covered service, paid by a patient to the rendering provider before receiving the service. IT may define in an insurance policy and paid by an insured person each time a medical service if accessed. This amount is typically set by your insurance provider.
  • Co-Insurance – The percentage of costs of a covered health care service you pay after you’ve paid your deductible, until the annual out-of-pocket expense is met. This amount if set forth by your insurance provider.
  • Deductible – The amount paid out-of-pocket by the policy holder before an insurance provider will pay any expenses.
  • Self-pay – Uninsured patient who pays their provider out of pocket for their medical care.
  • Explanation of Benefits (E.O.B.) – a statement sent by a health insurance company to covered individuals explaining what medical treatments and/ or services were paid for on their behalf.
